Tempura Fukamachi Tokyo

It’s been a long time since I’ve found a place that can rival my favorite tempura restaurant in the world, but I think I may have found a worthy contender at half the price (at least during lunchtime).

Tempura Fukamachi Tokyo

I fell in love with my meal at Tempura Fukamachi. It seems like I am not the only one who loves Fukamachi, as it was one of the more difficult reservations to book. The only time slot I could get was a 1:45PM lunch, which required a credit card deposit.

What makes the tempura at Fukamachi stand out is the batter. The batter is so delicate and light, not a bit greasy at all. Chef Fukamachi uses white sesame oil and religiously monitors the temperature and frequently changes the oil. The result is phenomenal.

The shrimp tempura is a standout and easily must be one of his signature dishes. Interestingly, the head is one of the best parts. Chef Fukamachi is able to fry it in such a way as to make it tremendously delicate, light, crispy, and oh-so-flavorful. I was shocked how much I enjoyed it.

Diners choose between one of four different set courses that range in price from JPY8000 to JPY13,000. Because I actually love vegetable tempura, I ended up ordering the Vegetable Set (which still includes two shrimps) and Bryan ordered the No. 3, which includes shrimp (2), vegetables (5), and fish (3). Most importantly, it includes the uni tempura, which is really special.

General Thoughts – Tempura Fukamachi

I absolutely loved my meal here. I especially liked the fact that they offered a vegetable-focused tempura tasting, which I really enjoyed. The tempura quality is top notch and is very, very close in quality to 2-Michelin starred Tempura Kondo, my favorite tempura place.

Reservations are hard to get, so definitely book early. I booked through my hotel concierge, who took my credit card number in order to secure the reservation. The restaurant will charge JPY8000 per person if cancellation or rescheduling is made within 3 days of the reserved date.

It’s cash only, so be sure to bring plenty of it. They do not accept credit card.

[…] We had absolutely fantastic tempura at Tempura Fukamachi. The batter was light and delicate, the ingredients were fresh, and all-in-all it rivaled my favorite tempura place, Tempura Kondo for about half the price (during lunchtime). More details in a separate post to come. [update: click here for the link to Tempura Fukamachi] […]
