Whirlpool CES 2014 video + giveaway!

January 14, 2014 by Jennifer Che 52 Comments

Untitled

What a whirlwind week!

I certainly ran into several travel snafus both on the way to CES and on the way back. Weather delays in Boston caused our flight to Vegas to be canceled. We scrambled desperately to find an alternate flight but ended up having to delay our trip by one day.

It meant we only had two full days at CES. Hardly enough time to absorb everything, but we tried our best.

On the way back, our plane had mechanical problems and we had to hang around Dallas for three hours waiting for a new plane. On the bright side, I got a chance to try some fantastic Texas BBQ while I was waiting. Now, finally, I’m back in Boston and I’m pleasantly surprised by the warm weather (though I know it’s going to get cold again really soon).’

It was fun exploring all the new kitchen technology at CES. Whirlpool’s booth focused a lot on their three pillars of connection, expression, and innovation.

My favorite concept at the booth was the concept of a flat induction cooktop that had the flexibility to heat anywhere on its surface, responding organically to whatever sized pot is placed on top of it. This flat cooktop would also provide access to social media, email, and the web (like recipes!).

Alas, this is a pure concept right now, and I’m not sure how long it will be before something like this is available in the marketplace. Can’t wait for something like this to actually come out!

Another useful product which is coming out in 2014 is the CoolVox refrigerator, which has Harman/Kardon® speakers sneakily tucked within the refrigerator. You can control it wirelessly with your smartphone acting as a remote. Whirlpool’s goals were to reduce the number of wires in the kitchen. This definitely beats having to mount speakers on your kitchen walls or trying to look for valuable counter space for the speakers.

Finally, I saw some fun washer/dryers that had some pretty cool designs on them. I must say my current laundry room is not the most fashionable room in the house. It would be fun to jazz it up a bit with some style – maybe a colorful machine matched up with equally bold carpeting or something. Whirlpool is releasing two designs this year – a black diamond design and a chrome polka dot design, which you can see in the video. If those go over well, they’ll expand the design selection in the years to come.

Speaking of the video . . .

I mentioned in my last post that I shot a video while I was at CES at the Whirlpool booth.  The video is now LIVE! You can see it on Whirlpool’s CES site or see it embedded below.

Enjoy!

I would love to have a refrigerator that has the ability to pull up a recipe on the web and tell me what ingredients I have (or don’t have). Then it could email/text me the ingredients that I need to purchase at the store. It would be even better if the software could tell me which store in my area has the best price on the item(s).

I’d love to have electronics in my house connect with my smartphone — It would be great to be able to start my crock pot while I’m at work, or make sure I turned off my hair straightener or space heater by just checking an app or my phone. I’s also love it if I could make sure all the lights are off during the day — I’m sure it could add up to a decent electric savings!

More multifunction tools that eliminate single function tools, so you save space but still have the convenience. Also a single person dishwasher…or a dishwasher that can sense the size of the load and reduce water usage accordingly. I’m single and sometimes it takes me more than a week to fill the dishwasher to make running a load worth it, in the mean time I run out of spoons or glasses. A single rack dishwasher would be ideal for tiny 1-person apartments and homes.

My idea for the future of my home: I would actually like to own a home of my own, firstly, and if I did have a home, I would want solar panels on the roof, and all energy-saving appliances in the kitchen, laundry room, sensor faucets throughout, excellent venting system over the gas range, and a nice open layout that makes moving around in the house, a breeze 🙂

I would like for someone to design a refrigerator with a dedicated storage section and door ( with adjustable temperature ) for wine storage. I think even with space for just about 12 bottles, would be of immense help for most people who don’t want to clutter the living space with separate refrigerators for wine storage or even worse don’t have the space.

My house was built in 1919 – that means there is beautiful original woodwork and build-ins, but it’s pretty drafty! I’d work on updating the home without losing the original features that I love. Our washer and dryer are from 1990 – why not replace those with something a little more effecient! 😉
