Daybird LA - Best Szechuan Hot Chicken

    Published: Jan 25, 2022 · Modified: Feb 13, 2022 by Jennifer Che

DayBird is a tiny little fried chicken joint located off the beaten path in a random, non-descript strip mall (which thankfully has plenty of underground parking). When we went in October, there was no indoor dining whatsover. They literally just had a counter right at their door where you could order fried chicken to go.

Evenly spaced stickers on the sidewalk showed us how to maintain social distance.

Frankly, there's no real good place to sit. We didn't feel like sitting in our car, so we just found a concrete ledge to sit on and enjoy our fried wonders.

Fried wonders indeed. Everything was fantastic.

Daybird uses famous Californian Jidori®chickens. Jidori®chickens are quite the rage in California at the moment. These free-range, locally raised chickens are fed "all natural grains, without meat by-products, hormones, or steroids."

Daybird only has a handful of things on its menu: signature Szechuan Hot Chicken Tenders (choose between 5 different levels of spice), the Szechuan Hot Chicken Sando, pickles, and fries. Everything is fried in rice bran oil, and they make everything to order, so be prepared to wait 15-25 minutes if you make a walk-up order.

The chicken was phenomenal, airy and crispy on the outside, super juicy on the inside. The fries blew me away as well. They were lightly battered with some sort of coating, amazingly crispy and super light. Despite the non-ideal dining environment, we loved the food.

    Highly recommended!
