    Merry (Belated) Christmas

Published: Dec 29, 2023 by Jennifer Che

Merry Christmas! Greetings from Southern California, where we are spending Christmas with family that we have not seen in a very long time. There’s a comfort in re-experiencing decades-long family traditions during the holidays. We’re so thankful to be able to come back.

I’m taking this opportunity to try and catch up just a bit on my backlog of posts. I’ve traveled quite a bit this year, but have fallen woefully behind in posting here in this space. I’m still working my way through our month of travel in Mainland China (this past JANUARY!).

I plan to at least write a summary of the year, where I will share some highlights from the past year. For more current updates, feel free to check out my Instagram, Facebook, or even LinkedIn posts.

The pandemic was a weird time that still messes with my sense of time. Even though we were stuck in Hong Kong at the beginning of the pandemic (and celebrated Christmas over Zoom with family in 2020), we did have the opportunity to travel more in 2021 and 2022, which gave us a peek into what Christmas looked like in other parts of the world.

Last year we spent a significant amount of time in Brussels, and got to see the city come alive with incredible lights, decorations, a huge Christmas market, and more. Here are some photos from that time . . .

The Grand Place, the old city square that never loses its romantic charm, becomes even more special during Christmastime.
At night it lights up into many colors, and music lights shows occur regularly throughout the evening.
In the surrounding area, a huge Christmas market springs up during the month of December.
St. Catherine’s Square is another lively area that’s not too far from the Grand Place.
All sorts of traditional Belgian foods are available, such as waffles, fries, beer, and chocolates. We always like to get mulled wine, which is also easy to find.
Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert is a fantastic place to buy chocolates (my favorite is Pierre Marcolini) and waffles (go sit down at Maison Dandoy at THIS location, where the waffles are still made to order and not made in advance).

    Festive Street Lights

Each street gets to choose how to decorate its own lights. It was really fun to walk around and explore the light decorations of each street. Some are quite elaborate!

Yes, this was a performer on stilts walking down the pedestrian street! So festive!
We showed up right before the Christmas Market opened, so we got to see a lot of the things being set up. This ended up being a HUGE chocolate/candy shop where people could buy all sorts of delectable chocolates and more.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
