Cafe Le Cirio: Like Walking Back in Time
Walking into Cafe Le Cirio sort of feels like you are walking back in time. The historic cafe is full of character and old world luxurious class. In fact, this was once a favorite hangout places for literary giants Victor Hugo and Alexadros Doumas. Writers, painters, scientists, and all different types of artists met here to exchange ideas.
The Real Reason to Come: the Beer
It's funny because the main reason Bryan brought me to this place (after he had visited solo earlier) was because this is one of the few bars in Belgium that actually has Westvleteren, probably one of the world's most highly sought after beers. Like many pubs in Brussels, the beer selection is very good.
The food is classic Belgian comfort food. It's fine, hearty, and tasty, though probably nothing to write home about. We enjoyed our moules frites and chicken waterzooi.
My salad was a generous portion and it was solid, nutritious, and most certainly filled me up.
Surprisingly Excellent Belgian Waffle
We were pleasantly surprised by the Belgian-style waffle. I absolutely loved the ridiculously high-piled whipped cream. The waffle was delicious and close (but still not quite as good) as the ethereal one at Maison Dandoy. It was still absolutely fantastic and we devoured the whole thing after lunch.
This was the last lunch we enjoyed in Brussels the day before we flew back to Hong Kong. Little did we know that after that lunch, it would be many, many months before we would dine inside a restaurant again. And now, it's still unclear when we'll be able to dine in a restaurant again as normal folks.
It's quite crazy how things change so fast.
