During the first two to three weeks of our unexpected 7-week stint in Brussels, we were enamored by the local food, tasting Belgian waffles, exploring Belgian beers, and getting our moules frites fix. By the third week, we were getting a bit tired of Belgian cuisine and started to crave Asian flavors.
We were pleasantly surprised by what we found.
Umamido Ramen is a hip ramen bar that's walking distance away from the Grand Place. They pride themselves in making what they call "honest ramen", ramen made with "ethically farmed ingredients" and "locally sourced produce."
The Menu: Ramen, Mazemen, Steamed Buns . . .
The menu focuses on different types of ramen and also offers mazemen, steamed bun sandwiches, and a few smaller appetizers. The signature "Original Ramen of the Chef" is delicious, with spicy tonkotsu broth, thin sliced and thick cut pork belly, kimchi, vegetables, and a whole marinated egg. The noodles were chewy, the broth was flavorful and delicious, and all in all, it was a deliciously satisfying bowl of ramen.
We also tried the fried chicken, which was tasty, and their own namesake Belgian white beer "No Fox Given", which was great.
Quality Ingredients, Interesting Dishes, Cozy Environment
All in all, I can totally see why this place is so successful. It has a great combination of quality ingredients, interesting dishes, and a trendy yet cozy environment.
At close to €20 for the signature ramen (and others still costing €12 - €14), it runs on the high side for ramen. However, the quality of what you get makes it highly worthwhile, in my opinion.
There are seven locations throughout Belgium, including in Brussels, Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp, as well as a couple in Switzerland!
Highly recommend!
