    Hanu Wan Chai - NOW CLOSED

    Hello Hanwoo beef!

    I am embarrassed to say I had no idea what hanwoo beef was before I we visited Hanu in Wan Chai earlier this year. Perhaps it's because I had never been to Korea before (until this past April!!). Or perhaps it's because this premium beef is famously hard to find outside of Korea (compared to its more famous cousin "Wagyu" or "Kobe" beef).

    Hanu, a new-ish restaurant opened by Lai Sun Dining, offers a rare opportunity to taste Korea’s prized Hanwoo beef without the premium price tag.

    Known for its exceptional marbling and tender texture, Hanwoo is considered by some to be even superior to Wagyu. Hanwoo comes in different grades, and Hanu proudly serves the highest grade 1++ Korean Hanwoo beef (similar to A5 for Japanese Wagyu).

    Hanu offers a variety of meal sets featuring hanwoo 1++ grade beef cuts like striploin and skirt steak, pork belly, short ribs, or bulgoli, each including a daily soup and unlimited servings of "banchan" appetizers and rice.

    We decided to try two different kinds of beef (to compare), and then we also ordered an extra side of Korean pancakes and fried chicken.

    The Beef is Delicious

    The beef is the star of the show, and for good reason. Juicy, meaty, perfectly cooked, we very much enjoyed both types of beef. Given the reasonable price (~ HK $398 - $428 for the beef set menu), the portions are a bit smaller than average (which is perfectly fine with me!).

    It was nice to share two different kinds and try both. Each beef set comes with several types of vegetables, such as sauteed purple greens, long green pepper, broccoli, and mushroom.

    Unlimited Sides!

    For a vegetable lover like me, I loved that the sides are unlimited. They save plates by serving all three sides in small-ish portions on one plate. The day we went we had oyster mushrooms, spinach, and sprouts. We certainly asked for re-fills at least once, if not more.

    We ordered Korean pancakes (since I always love "panjeon"!). Honestly, it was OK but I prefer ones I've had at other places more. It was sort of a sampler where you try three different kinds: kim chi, seafood, and possibly some kind of veggie pajeon. *Update* - the current menu allows you to order the pancakes a la carte (e.g., kim chi or seafood), which is a great improvement.

    I'm a sucker for Korean fried chicken, so when I saw it on the menu I just had to have it. I really enjoyed their fried chicken, and I wouldn't even mind coming here and NOT ordering beef and just ordering the chicken! Of course, it's nice to mix and match as well.

    All in all, I'm thrilled that we can get Korean 1++ greade Hanwoo beef so close to our home. I don't mind the smaller portion size (it's probably healthier!), and I think the unlimited vegetables is a nice balance! I predict it'll be a place we visit regularly (hoping it survives!). You can bring your own wine and pay a corkage fee a well, which is what we wanted to do with such nice beef!
